SPRING FASHION SHOW 2019

FASHION x CHARITY'S   SPRING FASHION SHOW

"to show how second hand can be sustainable and stylish"

buy less, bin less.

How can we reduce the negative impacts of the fashion industry? It's simple: buy less and bin less. Every industry is based upon demand and supply. Currently our 'throw away society' is demanding a vast amount of clothing products which are cheap and 'trendy' - this forces companies to reduce their production costs and bring out new clothing items each week in order to make profit on their products. This explains why clothes from fast fashion stores are such low quality, and why we are hearing about child workers in the Eastern world. Due to this low quality of clothing, combined with the human's greedy nature, we are seeing the growth in people's views that clothing is more disposable than ever.

The reality is - each item of clothing will eventually find it's way to landfill, although if we give these items a longer life, this will reduce the demand of new clothing being produced, as well as the rate at which clothes are being disposed of. The benefits of this spread over all key areas that we focus on:

- environmental awareness, lower numbers of clothing in landfill per day equates to less green house emissions per day.

- equality for sweatshop workers, a lower demand on clothing means that the workers are under less strain to produce clothing.

- sustainable fashion, the fast fashion companies change their sales strategies, as the consumers are prepared to spend more   for higher quality clothing.

All of this can be achieved by including second hand clothing into our wardrobes. This is why FASHION x CHARITY is launching a fashion show in order to encouraging Thirsk's local community to shop second hand.
